plastic flags on stringtwo pieces
Description from Alexander Gray Associates:
Many bodegas, Asian grocery stores, Indian markets, and curry stands all around New York City proudly decorate their shops with flags and pennant streamer. These flags were once used to decorate public spaces to commemorate special dates. Once, the color syntax encouraged civic or religious observances; now the flags are used for commercial speech. Rather than reminding us of a saint or independence, they now may declare a sale or grand opening. What were once emblems that came out occasionally, are now ever present fixtures. In these stores every day is special. In 2001 Paul Ramirez Jonas utilizes this idea to create the work, Every Day. He designs a calendar, with one flag designated to each day. Together, the flags compile a history where the remembered co-exist with the forgotten, and the mundane is juxtaposed with the significant.
