Description

“Dorothy Speaks,” was a project undertaken in February-March, 2005, in Center City, Philadelphia. It was a street giveaway of thousands of offset printed art cards based on the artists’ paintings and words.

Twelve separate cards, in an edition of 750 each, were given away over several days. Acquiring a complete set required finding the artists giving them away on each of those days. Each card was packaged with advice on handling art with some irreverence and advice on when the artists were giving the cards away.

“Dorothy Speaks” is a part of the artists’ Zero .1 Percent for Art Commission. The Commission’s stated mission is to bridge the gap between ordinary people and art.

The “Dorothy Speaks” cards were one of four separate, related works given away on the streets of Philadelphia at different times. All of the objects were included in a solo show (April 27, 2008) at the Philadelphia Institute for Advanced Studies (PiFAS). It was a one day show/giveaway in a mini-tabletop gallery called GUS. The show was called the “Zero .1% For Art Commission Reading Room and Fire Sale.”
