‘’POSTCARDS FROM SOUTH AFRICA,’’ Axis Gallery, 453 West 17th Street, (212) 741-2582 (through Oct. 2). The gallery put out an open call for submissions to artists in South Africa, stipulating that all entries should be postcard size. A result is a rich array of some 175 very small works by 80 artists, hung salon style in broad thematic clusters. The styles and subjects vary widely, from figurative to abstract, conceptual work to historical narrative, with references to South African politics and culture, past and present, serving as a binder. Not everything is of equal interest, but there’s a lot of information about a vital contemporary art scene barely known here."
